PALESTINA: TIERRA Y PUEBLO EN EL SIGLO XXI

Año tras año, siglo tras siglo, Palestina pervive como tierra y como pueblo. Desde el Mediterráneo al río Jordán, desde Líbano a Egipto, Palestina se perfila como una tierra por naturaleza arraigada en Oriente Próximo, sin posibilidad de cambiar de sitio, de migrar o de desaparecer. La Palestina actual se reparte como pueblo entre la Palestina histórica, en la que perviven más de cinco millones de habitantes palestinos (alrededor de un millón y medio son desplazados internos), y la diáspora, con una cifra que también supera los cinco millones. Es un pueblo en su mayoría refugiado, no por ley natural, sino por mandato político, empresarial y religioso. Los poderes así lo determinan, lo permiten, lo apoyan, y así ocurre. El ciclo que se presenta se sitúa en esta tierra y lo realiza este pueblo: Mohammad Bakri y Juliano Mer Khamis desde Haifa, Buthina Canaan Khoury y Liana Badr desde Ramallah, Azza El-Hassan desde Amman, Carol Mansour desde Beirut, Rawan al Damen desde Doha, Omar Shargawi desde Copenhague y Edward Salem desde Chicago.

Han transcurrido cincuenta siglos desde que el pueblo cananeo se asentara en la región en el siglo XXXI a.C. La tierra Palestina sigue en su sitio, ocupada e inmovilizada, pero persistente, a la espera de ser entendida, reconocida, sentida por esa parte del mundo que aún la desprecia, la condena. Año tras año se mantiene la ocupación israelí de Palestina. Año tras año, el pueblo palestino se resiste a tal agresión ilegal. Se rescatan ahora testimonios reales que dejan acceder a la historia y la riqueza de la cultura palestina, y a través de ellos conocer y crear una visión propia del conflicto árabe-israelí. La apuesta es abrir un espacio de encuentro y reflexión para el conocimiento y el diálogo crítico en relación con la situación de Palestina y las condiciones de su cine documental, en una fase aún colonial dentro de un sistema de ocupación. El propósito no se reduce a mostrar la opresión del pueblo palestino, sino que pretende ir más allá y mostrar su heterogeneidad vista desde dentro, la existencia de sus identidades, culturas y representaciones a través de la variedad de sus prácticas e historias cinematográficas.

Palestina: tierra y pueblo en el siglo 21, ciclo que alberga Documenta Madrid 2011, revisa la historia de la región y los factores clave de la ocupación israelí: las invasiones militares en campos de refugiados palestinos, la segunda Intifada, la lucha de las mujeres, la sociedad israelí, el muro, Gaza y el porqué del derecho al retorno. Todos ellos temas de un pueblo y una tierra que luchan por permanecer unidos. Diez documentales palestinos, realizados entre 2001 y 2010, revelan esta realidad.

PALESTINE: LAND AND PEOPLE IN THE 21st CENTURY

Year after year, century after century, Palestine perseveres as a land and a people. From the Mediterranean to the Jordan River, from Lebanon to Egypt, Palestine emerges as a land by its very nature rooted in the Middle East, with no chance of moving, migrating or disappearing. As a people, Palestine today is spread out among those in historical Palestine, where over five million Palestinian people (about one and half million internally displaced) continue to live, and the diaspora, whose numbers also exceed five million. It is a people living for the most part as refugees, not by virtue of any natural law but rather by religious, business and political mandate. Those in power have thus determined, permitted, and supported this − and so it is. This series is set in this land and is made by its people: Mohammad Bakri and Juliano Mer Khamis from Haifa, Buthina Canaan Khoury and Liana Badr from Ramallah, Azza El-Hassan from Amman, Carol Mansour from Beirut, Rawan Damen from Doha, Omar Shargawi from Copenhagen and Edward Salem from Chicago.

Fifty centuries have elapsed since the Canaanite people settled in the region in the 31st century BC. The Palestinian land is still in its place, occupied and immobilized, but persistent, waiting to be understood, recognized, and felt by that part of the world that still despises it, condemns it. The Israeli occupation of Palestine continues year after year. And year after year, the Palestinian people resist this illegal aggression. We bring to light real stories, giving insight into the history and richness of Palestinian culture, and through them, an understanding and the creation of a unique view on the Arab-Israeli conflict. The goal is to open a meeting place for reflecting, sharing knowledge, and engaging in critical dialogue on the situation in Palestine and the conditions of its documentary film, still in a colonial phase within a system of occupation. The purpose is not just to show the oppression of the Palestinian people, but rather aims to go further and show its heterogeneity as seen from within, the reality of its identities, cultures and perceptions by means of the variety of its practices and stories on film.

Palestine: Land and People in the 21st Century, a series hosted by Documenta Madrid 2011, provides an overview of the history of the region and the key factors to the Israeli occupation: military invasions into Palestinian refugee camps, the second Intifada, the struggle of women, Israeli society, the wall, Gaza and the reason behind the right to return. All these issues about a people and a land struggling to stay together. Produced between 2001 and 2010, these ten Palestinian documentaries reveal this reality.
